Queensland Government has approved two separate laws setting renewable energy and emissions reduction targets over the next decade, aiming to reach the greenhouse emission 2050 net zero target, according to ABC News and Argus Media.
Summary:
Queensland’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets will be enshrined in law after state MPs overwhelmingly backed the move. In response to the 2050 net zero emission ultimate target and to get rid of a coal-fired dependent power generation system, the state government required net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets of 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and 75 percent by 2035 under the Clean Economy Jobs Act 2024, strengthening Queensland’s position in Australia’s energy transition to deal with the long-term climate change issue.
“The evidence shows we must act now, and we must act decisively if we are to tackle climate change,” said Mick de Brenni, Energy and Clean Economy Job Minister, in an exclusive interview with ABC News.
According to the Clean Economy Jobs Act, it provides for the development of emissions reduction plans for sectors, an annual progress statement, and establishes an expert panel to provide advice on emissions reduction progress as well as efficient and cost-effective ways to reduce emissions. Moreover, the legislation aims to attract investment in new industries and drive the decarbonisation of existing ones by enshrining the targets in law. This commitment aligns with forecasts from the Department of Energy and Climate, suggesting that Queensland is poised to surpass its 2030 emission target.

Exciting news from @ Queensland government! MPs have just passed laws to enshrine greenhouse gas reduction targets, incorporating 30% below 2005 levels by 2030 and 75% by 2035. This bold move strengthens the state's commitment to clean energy and fights climate change. @Minister Mick de Brenni emphasises the urgency of action. The Clean Economy Jobs Act enables sector-specific plans and progress tracking. Enshrining targets in law boosts investment in sustainable industries. Queensland is on track to exceed its 2030 goal, signalling a bright future ahead. Via @ABC News and @argusmedia
